Thimble Island Guest House

The extensive renovation of this small cottage allows it to live large. The distinction between inside and outside is blurred by offering spaces of varying degrees of enclosure. All rooms open to exterior spaces with one bathroom’s shower open to the elements. The 20’ folding glass door allows the great room and screen porch to be merged and sea breezes to flow throughout. A covered porch links the cottage to a repurposed shed that now houses a rustic family room with barn-style doors to sleeping berths and a breathtaking view. Off grid-living seems natural in this setting. A thermal ‘chimney’ exhausts hot air which siphons in cool breezes through strategically placed interior and exterior windows. Strategic solar shading blocks summer heat gain while admitting the sun in cool seasons
