Second Empire Residence
Haddam, CT
2002
Seamless additions and modifications to this noteworthy historic residence were made to provide for the needs of a growing family. The tiny galley kitchen was reorganized and enlarged slightly by adding a bay, and an adjacent mudroom entry was built. A second-floor home office was added over a one-story structure. Space was carved out for a stairway to the third floor where, in the attic, a spacious owners’ suite was created, with access to a new roof deck. In the front, a large spruce, which hid the house, was removed and a circular driveway installed to improve vehicular access and provide a more dramatic sense of arrival. The large rear porch was rebuilt and better integrated with the site.
